The PicoStar® is a professional pico laser machine built for tattoo removal, pigmentation, fractional skin treatment and scar work. It’s an Nd:YAG platform running both 1064 nm and 532 nm, with pulses under 300 ps, maximum pulse energy of 800 mJ and 2.7 GW peak power (the highest peak power of any picosecond system in its class).

Clinics configure the system around four handpieces, from precise pigment work at 2 mm through to large-area treatment at 16 mm, including a fractional MicroSpot array for resurfacing. Spot size on the Zoom ST adjusts by rotating a ring on the handpiece, so there’s no tip change mid-treatment.

Every PicoStar® supplied in the UK includes Asclepion Academy training, ongoing clinical and technical support from our London team and a two-year warranty as part of the A-List Package.

PicoStar® Handpieces and Spot Sizes

Four handpieces give the PicoStar® its range. The Zoom ST is included as standard; the Flat-Top and MicroSpot handpieces are available as optional accessories, so the system can be specified around what your clinic actually treats.

The Zoom ST is ergonomic, thin and light, built from premium-grade stainless steel for easy handling and cleaning. A rotating ring on the handpiece adjusts spot size without changing the handpiece or the tip, so a practitioner can move between larger and smaller areas mid-treatment.

How the PicoStar® Compares With PicoSure® and PicoWay®

The three leading picosecond platforms take different routes to the same set of indications. Research identified that fractional 1064 nm picosecond energy can create controlled micro-disruptions within the epidermis, activating measurable repair and tissue remodelling signals at a molecular level, including upregulation of multiple collagens and healing markers.

For clinics offering pico rejuvenation, this kind of independent research provides a stronger, more credible foundation for patient consultations and treatment positioning.

PicoStar – Frequently Asked Questions

A pico laser, or picosecond laser, delivers ultra-short pulses measured in picoseconds (trillionths of a second). Clinics use them for tattoo removal, pigmentation and melasma, acne scarring and other scar work and fractional skin rejuvenation. The PicoStar® covers all of those from one platform, with pulses under 300 ps and 2.7 GW of peak power.
Pulse duration changes the mechanism. A Q-switched laser works in nanoseconds and relies partly on the photothermal effect. A picosecond pulse is around a thousand times shorter, so more of the work is photomechanical, meaning pigment is shattered by pressure rather than heated. That means finer fragmentation for the lymphatic system to clear, with less heat delivered to the surrounding skin.
Its dual wavelengths cover a wide range of pigment colours, including 1064 nm for dark inks like black and blue and 532 nm for warmer shades such as red, orange and yellow. Ink chemistry varies considerably between studios and eras, so a test patch is always sensible on multi-coloured work.
It can be used across Fitzpatrick I–VI with appropriate parameter selection. The photomechanical action limits thermal impact, which reduces the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in darker skin tones. Darker skin still requires conservative parameters, patch testing and a practitioner trained in treating it.
Yes to both. Tattoos treated with older systems but still holding pigment can be worked on, as picosecond pulses fragment ink that didn’t respond to nanosecond treatment. The beam can also be targeted precisely enough to treat sections of a tattoo without affecting surrounding ink, which supports partial removal and cover-up preparation.
It depends on the indication and the individual patient. Tattoo removal is often a course spaced several weeks apart, with the number depending on ink density, colour, depth and age. Pigmentation and rejuvenation protocols are also planned as a course rather than a single session.
Most patients report mild discomfort rather than pain; the uniform beam profile and short pulse duration both help and topical anaesthetic can be used where appropriate.

Downtime varies by indication. Tattoo removal commonly produces redness and swelling for a few days and rejuvenation often produces mild redness and flaking. Patients should avoid sun exposure, saunas, hot tubs and significant sweating for at least 48 hours, and should not pick or scratch the treated area.

Pricing depends on configuration, because the handpieces are specified around what your clinic treats. We quote against your treatment mix rather than publishing a list price that would be wrong for most clinics. Finance and leasing arrangements are available and we can model the cost against expected treatment volume so you’re looking at payback rather than purchase price alone.

The PicoStar® measures 420 × 1160 × 1060 mm and weighs approximately 160 kg. It moves on wheels but requires a dedicated treatment room with adequate ventilation, laser-controlled-area signage and door controls. We survey the site and confirm electrical supply before scheduling delivery, then handle installation and commissioning, with training arranged around your clinic’s diary.

It depends on who is treating and where you are. In England, laser and IPL came out of CQC scope in 2010, so registration is triggered by the regulated activity rather than the equipment. Many local authorities separately require a special treatment licence for premises using Class 3B and Class 4 lasers and conditions vary between councils.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own registration requirements. A national licensing scheme for non-surgical cosmetic procedures in England is in development but not in force as of August 2026. Confirm your position with your local authority and your insurer.
